Advisory Councils for the academic departments were established in 1941. Each council consists of from three to fifteen members appointed by the trustees for three-year terms; nominations are made by the departments in consultation with the Alumni Council. Membership is not restricted to alumni, but at least one member of each council must be an alumnus. Meetings for consultation and conference are held at such times as are mutually agreed upon by the advisory council and the department concerned. Close to 500 persons serve on some forty advisory councils.
